In utter dismay I found Noah Melis, drummer at Bed Rugs at my doorstep, completely out of breath wheezing about an imminent apocalypse if the new Bed Rugs single, Piles, wouldn’t have an accompanying video clip by the beginning of next week. Well pluck me sideways and call me Barley, we better get cookin’! The band recorded some footage of themselves playing their song and basically threw a hard drive my way and said: “DO SOMETHING!”
A sleepless weekend later, I found out that basically using After Effects in the worst possible ways I could think of, garnered quite interesting results. I’ve been using AE since I first made a new years celebration video-card for my godfather back in 2000 when I was 14 years old. I remember the naïve way of playing with the plugins, getting strange results without knowing what anything does, pressing random buttons.
Now, 15 years later, I know my AE and so I set out on a nostalgic adventure of bad color keys, layer transparencies and composition. I call it AE-trash. Probably the shortest turn-around for a video clip I’ve ever worked on, but I think it’s pretty unique nonetheless.
